Dick Delanoy
There are many ways to describe a person.
Academically, I earned a BA in biology from Wake Forest University in 1973, a PhD in neuroscience in 1979 from the University of Florida, and a remedial Masters of Science in Computer Science in 1987 from the University of Virginia.
Professionally, I have been a fisherman, a marine biologist, a hospital lab technician, an acting assistant professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, a software engineer in factory automation at GE Fanuc, and a computer scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
Personally, I have a 20 year old daughter, Riannon, at the Rochester Institute of Technology, studying film and animation. I have been happily separated from my ex-wife, Ann Hollier, for 10 years, and in January 2007 we finally filed papers for divorce, although we continue to be excellent friends. I have a constantly growing circle of wonderful people I am proud to call friends. I keep discovering family and am amazed at how cool my tribe is.
Spiritually, I have attained the rank of first degree black belt in modern Kenpo (Kenpo 2000) with my teachers Matthew Moncreaff from Massachusetts and Skip Hancock from Washington State. I have been on three vision quests guided by my friend and mentor Sparrow Hart. I learned and practiced TM and the TM Siddhis for 20 years. In the past year I have taken Ayahuasca for healing with Hamilton Souther of Blue Morpho Tours near Iquitos, Peru, and I have learned and practice Vipassana meditation. I consider myself a roll-your-own seeker of a more spiritual life, although my attitudes align themselves most closely with Buddhism.
In September 2006, I took early retirement from MIT to pursue the challenge and adventure of becoming a better person. Since then, my health has improved drastically, my life has become full of friends, and I am experiencing tremendous support of nature. I can barely comprehend all that has happened to me this past decade and especially this past year. For all these things I am grateful, and look forward in wonderment to the years ahead.
For some additional flavor of who I am (something that does not read like a list of lists), see the loosely autobiographical story of "The 8th Blind Man"
Namaste
